Linux Web Server

So I came up with the idea I wanted to install a Web File Sharing server. Read a lot of articles, some referenced FTP servers, some referenced Web Servers, but I only found one piece of software that did exactly what I wanted it to do. I wanted a web base, customizable front end, file sharing server that didn't require anybody I wanted to share files with learn anything about FTP, or install an FTP client.Took me a file to find one, and it came in a nice, self-installing package that ran a listening service instead of running MySQL, PHP, Apache and all the other fun stuff a normal web server requires.

Conficker- The new computer worm that has everybody worried about their system, especially after the news pushed the April 1st change date. What the news did not tell you is the following:

Conficker has only infected 2-5 Million PC's as opposed to the 10 Million reported.

Think this is a big number? Infected Systems in the US is only 4% or the 2-5 Million. So we are talking maybe 150,000 systems in the US actually have the Conficker Worm on it. Microsoft patched the vulnerability that allowed this to spread so far back in October. Conficker is also not replicating (spreading) with it's newest version D. If the systems haven't been able to update, and are still running older versions of this worm, then yes it will spread to whatever computer it can find, then when it is finally able to update, it stops.

Conficker is still just waiting. For what, who knows, there are reverse engineers and other computer geeks looking into this and nobody can figure out what this worm is supposed to do. Right now all it is doing is sitting there waiting, accessing 50,000 randomly generated domains a day looking for instructions, until it finds those instructions, it will continue to sit and wait.

 Bottom Line:

  1. You probably have not been infected, Microsoft Patched this back in October so if you have yoru system up to date, your system is protected.
  2. Anti-Virus companies have known about this and have been proactive about it since November, most computers if kept updated will stop it or flag it for you to see.
  3. As of this moment in time it will do nothing to your system except sit there and wait for instructions, you want to remove it there are several options:
    1. See if your computer can browse to www.microsoft.com
    2. See if you can browse to www.symantec.com or www.mcafee.com

If you cannot get to those websites you very well could have it on your system. If so, go to your friends or neighbors computer and download the Conficker removal tool from whichever AV you use. All of them will do the job, but Mcafee has stated they will keep up to date on it and keep retroactive about finding a tool to fix it.

Keep your system up to date! I setup Automatic Updates to DL to my system, then I install when I am ready. That way it doesn't send my system into a reboot when I am in the middle of doing something. I also have my Symantec Endpoint Protection setup to auto-Live Update.

5 Minutes of downloading and installing updates is a lot better then possibly loosing everything on your system once this thing goes fully active with whatever attack.
